Environmental performance at our Cumbernauld premises

02/12/2009

Continuous improvement is at the forefront of environmental focus for OKI Printing Solutions' consumables manufacturing plant in Scotland.

Cumbernauld, near Glasgow in Scotland is the location for OKI Printing Solutions’ European manufacturing, configuration & assembly operations, supply chain and engineering support. The 200,000 sq foot facility, managed by OKI (UK) Limited is also the European distribution hub for OKI Printing Solutions.

Established in 1987, OKI (UK) Limited was able to transform its environmental performance when it relocated to its new purpose built facility in November 2005.

The key areas of improvement for reducing environmental impact were CO 2 savings, water treatment, energy usage and climate control. The site’s waste segregation policy which has reduced the amount of waste going to landfill by 70% (more).

CO 2 savings

  • Electricity usage down by 43% saving the release of 1.2 million kg of CO 2

  • The change from heavy fuel oil to natural gas resulted in a 39% reduction of 0.23 million kg of CO 2 not being released

  • A 79% reduction in water consumption following the withdrawal of a mono toner cartridge blow moulding installation

Water treatment

The water run-off at the Cumbernauld facility was an integral part of the design of the site in consideration of the local landscape and infrastructure.

All rain and wastewater runs off the site via a trench filtration system. Next it passes through a secondary filtration process comprising our reed bed and flora. Water then passes directly to the treatment facility at the local council.

The key benefits of this process are the elimination of soil erosion, reducing the flood risk outside of the site and removing the potential for contamination of any area where water is not desired.

Energy usage

  • The buildings’ Environmental Management Systems control energy usage by means of variable switch controllers

  • Outside light sensors dim internal lighting when there is sufficient natural light coming through windows

  • Internal movement sensors switch off lights when no movement is detected

Climate control

  • Climate control is natural and automated to ensure energy efficiency

  • Occasional mechanical cooling required only 10-12 days per year

  • Windows fitted with solar glare protection
